By default, git reset preserves the working directory. What’s happening: git reset rewinds your repository’s history all the way back to the specified SHA. Scenario: You’ve made some commits locally (not yet pushed), but everything is terrible, you want to undo the last three commits-like they never happened. Be sure you know what you’re throwing away here! (Maybe use git diff to confirm.) Reset “local” changes They were never committed, so Git can’t help us recover them later. Keep in mind: any changes you “undo” this way are really gone. You could provide a branch name or specific SHA you want to go back to or, by default, Git will assume you want to checkout HEAD, the last commit on the currently-checked-out branch. What’s happening: git checkout alters files in the working directory to a state previously known to Git. You want to undo everything in that file-just go back to the way it looked in the last commit. You haven’t committed those changes, though. Scenario: The cat walked across the keyboard and somehow saved the changes, then crashed the editor. With nothing currently staged, this just rewrites the previous commit message. What’s happening: git commit -amend will update and replace the most recent commit with a new commit that combines any staged changes with the contents of the previous commit. Undo with: git commit -amend or git commit -amend -m "Fixes bug #42" Scenario: You just typo’d the last commit message, you did git commit -m "Fxies bug #42" but before git push you realized that really should say “Fixes bug #42”. This is Git’s safest, most basic “undo” scenario, because it doesn’t alter history-so you can now git push the new “inverse” commit to undo your mistaken commit. If the old commit is “matter”, the new commit is “anti-matter”-anything removed in the old commit will be added in the new commit and anything added in the old commit will be removed in the new commit. What’s happening: git revert will create a new commit that’s the opposite (or inverse) of the given SHA. Scenario: You just ran git push, sending your changes to GitHub, now you realize there’s a problem with one of those commits. In this post, I’m going to take a look at some common scenarios where you might want to “undo” a change you’ve made and the best way to do it using Git. When you make a new commit, Git stores a snapshot of your repository at that specific moment in time later, you can use Git to go back to an earlier version of your project. ![]() In Git, “undo” can mean many slightly different things. The -hard to git reset tells Git to replace the index content with that from the chosen commit, and to update your work-tree to match. One of the most useful features of any version control system is the ability to “undo” your mistakes. ![]() Note that EF~2 would start at EF and count back twice, to D then to C, so that master (still HEAD) would point to commit C instead of commit D. Step 3 moves the current branch name to point to the selected commit. The (HEAD) annotation shows which branch name is the current branch name, and therefore which commit is the current commit as well (in this case EF). This gives you: A-B-C-D-EF <- master (HEAD), feature Step 2 creates the new name feature, identifying the same squashed EF commit that master identifies. Run git reset -hard HEAD^ or git reset -hard HEAD~ (either spelling is fine, use whatever you prefer to type in).Make sure everything is committed ( git status), so that step 3 can't wreck anything. There are many command sequences that can do it. ![]() 11/19/2023 0 Comments Average keystrokes per hour![]() ![]() On this web portal, you can practice touch typing as long as you want which is absolutely free of cost. You could end up with something like F t A t S y keeping the spaces too, or filling those in with characters you can remember. Mix in some upper and lower case characters, making it F t A t R w S y with some special characters added for good measure. Let’s use For Those About To Rock as a random song title as a loose example, which can be quickly converted into f t a t r, which if you then add We Salute You, you get f t a t r w s y. Once you have a song, poem or phrase in your head, one that you’re super familiar with, you’ve got the foundations for creating a potent password. The key from there is to blend that with lots of hard to crack padding. In fact, you can work with anything that’s familiar, like a poem maybe. ![]() One of the most common methods for making the task of creating a complicated yet memorable password is to make one up based around a song or a famous quote. Of course, the downside to this is ensuring that by creating a longer password you’re not immediately going to make it harder to remember for your own requirements. Each time you add in a character you’re going to make the task of cracking it that little bit harder, especially when it comes to fending off brute-force attacks. ![]() You want something longer, so a figure of around fifteen characters is a good amount of characters to head for. Roadie lacks the critical mass of jobs to keep me busy, and in the post-holiday retail lull, I'm unable to advance past the waiting list for the Amazon Flex delivery program. It's common for gig drivers to jump between apps from day to day or even hour by hour. Tech companies often don't eliminate the humans they merely eliminate the human interactions. It's a reminder that so much of what is passed off as technology is really just hiding the humans at the other end of a machine: warehouse packers, proxy grocery shoppers, line cooks, and drivers doing the mundane tasks just out of sight of the end customer. I will stand in lines and bide my time as clerks hunt for packages. I'm now a professional waiter, as in someone who waits so that others don't have to. As my mind simmers in the silence, it occurs to me that I've signed on to be more than a driver. The drive back to civilization is quiet all that remains of the Eclipse's long-ago-stolen stereo is a rat's nest of shoddy wiring and obsolete input cables snaking through the cabin. I've burned an hour and more than a gallon of gas and am now in a gig-delivery wasteland. Never mind the fact that the medication isn't about to manifest itself here anytime soon, the robot hangs up on me before I can protest.Īfter waiting it out, I collect my consolation prize: $8 for the inconvenience. Calling Roadie support feeds me an automated message: I can't cancel the gig until I've waited 15 minutes. But when I arrive, the pharmacy doesn't have the drug in stock. Promising $27 for what should be a roughly 90-minute task, it seems like a reasonable offer, even if it is entirely out of the way. My first Roadie gig involves a 30-mile drive into rural Michigan, where I'm supposed to pick up a prescription and deliver it 30 miles in another direction. Spoiler alert: I do even worse than that. Whatever the haul, Roadie charges the shipper a price based on the item's size and the trip's distance, takes a cut, and offers the job at an amount that is "intended for drivers already heading that way." It sounds simple enough, but Roadie's pay isn't always intuitive. There's also a booming business in prescription-drug delivery on the app. Walmart delivers groceries via Roadie, and airlines such as Delta and United use the app's drivers to reunite delayed baggage with its owners. Now, instead of going to the hardware store three times in a day, you can pay three delivery fees. In 2018, the Home Depot partnered with Roadie to offer same-day delivery on more than 20,000 items in select cities. Just this morning, by way of acknowledgment of Downie’s passing, a Canadian TV writer on Twitter posted, simply, a stanza from the Hip song “Another Midnight”: “Perhaps we’re an election day / Pumping hands and kissing all the babies / Ain’t no time for shadowed doubts or maybes / Is there another way? / Or we’re a stolen Cadillac / Racing for a roadblock in the distance / Flashing by a lifetime in an instance / Can we take it back?”įor my money, Downie’s greatest lyrical achievement - and one of the greatest ever, anywhere - is the 1993 song “Fifty Mission Cap.” The song is built around the story of Maple Leafs defenseman Bill Barilko, who disappeared without a trace on a fishing trip, only to be found dead 11 years later in the Canadian wild, the victim of a plane crash. It’s hard to call him the greatest lyricist Canada’s ever produced, given that country also gave the world Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, but he’s in their company, which says enough. In this, they also felt quintessentially Canadian - that cloying suspicion that something is not quite validated until it’s earned the approval not just of Canadians but of fans south of the border as well. The Hip are big in Canada, which sounds a bit like a lame joke, but it means that Downie always belonged peculiarly, and uniquely, to Canada.įor a long time, the book on the Hip was that, unlike Joni Mitchell or Neil Young or, God help us, Nickelback, they couldn’t quite break through in the States. I can’t go any further without confessing: Back then, I was not a huge Tragically Hip fan. In their later years, they graduated into a kind of venerated touring ensemble, sort of like the Grateful Dead, but the apex of their impact was in the early ’90s. The Hip (they are only and always referred to in Canada as the Hip) formed in Kingston, Ontario, in 1984. Downie, who died last night at 53 after a protracted and public bout with brain cancer, was the lead singer of the Tragically Hip, a band that is iconic in Canada and mostly known outside of Canada for being iconic in Canada. It’s considered the second long rest value that is still in use in modern sheet music.Īs the name suggests, this note indicates silence for double the duration of a whole note, which means that the player should pause for 8 beats in a 4/4 time signature. A double whole note rest is also known as a “double rest” or “breve rest” in British. ![]() |
